Death penalty function, 274 cases referre to Military Courts

ISLAMABAD,Pakistan (TNO) The military courts have ceased to function on expiry of mandated period, according to Pakistan Army’s Public Relations Department.According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the courts were established through constitutional amendment in the environment of heightened terrorism.It said routine judicial system was under stress wherein judicial set ups/ judges were also subjected to act of terrorism, therefore special constitutional arrangements were made to effectively check the terrorists. ISPR said during the period of its validity, two hundred seventy-four cases were referred to Military Courts. One hundred sixty-one culprits were awarded death penalty and twelve of them have been executed.It said cases were dealt through due process of law in Military Courts.
